1 Then all3605 Israel3478 gathered themselves6908 to413 David1732 unto Hebron,2275 saying,559 Behold,2009 we587 are thy bone6106 and thy flesh.1320

2 And moreover1571 in time past,8543 1571 8032 even1571 when Saul7586 was1961 king,4428 thou859 wast he that leddest out3318 and broughtest in935 853 Israel:3478 and the LORD3068 thy God430 said559 unto thee, Thou859 shalt feed7462 853 my people5971 853 Israel,3478 and thou859 shalt be1961 ruler5057 over5921 my people5971 Israel.3478

3 Therefore came935 all3605 the elders2205 of Israel3478 to413 the king4428 to Hebron;2275 and David1732 made3772 a covenant1285 with them in Hebron2275 before6440 the LORD;3068 and they anointed4886 853 David1732 king4428 over5921 Israel,3478 according to the word1697 of the LORD3068 by3027 Samuel.8050

4 And David1732 and all3605 Israel3478 went1980 to Jerusalem,3389 which1931 is Jebus;2982 where8033 the Jebusites2983 were, the inhabitants3427 of the land.776

5 And the inhabitants3427 of Jebus2982 said559 to David,1732 Thou shalt not3808 come935 hither.2008 Nevertheless David1732 took3920 853 the castle4686 of Zion,6726 which1931 is the city5892 of David.1732

6 And David1732 said,559 Whosoever3605 smiteth5221 the Jebusites2983 first7223 shall be1961 chief7218 and captain.8269 So Joab3097 the son1121 of Zeruiah6870 went first up,5927 7223 and was1961 chief.7218

7 And David1732 dwelt3427 in the castle;4679 therefore5921 3651 they called7121 it the city5892 of David.1732

8 And he built1129 the city5892 round about,4480 5439 even from4480 Millo4407 round about:5439 and Joab3097 repaired2421 853 the rest7605 of the city.5892

9 So David1732 waxed greater and greater:1980 1980 1431 for the LORD3068 of hosts6635 was with5973 him.

10 These428 also are the chief7218 of the mighty men1368 whom834 David1732 had, who strengthened themselves2388 with5973 him in his kingdom,4438 and with5973 all3605 Israel,3478 to make him king,4427 according to the word1697 of the LORD3068 concerning5921 Israel.3478

11 And this428 is the number4557 of the mighty men1368 whom834 David1732 had; Jashobeam,3434 a Hachmonite,1121 2453 the chief7218 of the captains:7991 he1931 lifted up5782 853 his spear2595 against5921 three7969 hundred3967 slain2491 by him at one259 time.6471

12 And after310 him was Eleazar499 the son1121 of Dodo,1734 the Ahohite,266 who1931 was one of the three7969 mighty men.1368

13 He1931 was1961 with5973 David1732 at Pas-dammim,6450 and there8033 the Philistines6430 were gathered together622 to battle,4421 where was1961 a parcel2513 of ground7704 full4392 of barley;8184 and the people5971 fled5127 from before4480 6440 the Philistines.6430

14 And they set themselves3320 in the midst8432 of that parcel,2513 and delivered5337 it, and slew5221 853 the Philistines;6430 and the LORD3068 saved3467 them by a great1419 deliverance.8668

15 Now three7969 of4480 the thirty7970 captains7218 went down3381 to5921 the rock6697 to413 David,1732 into413 the cave4631 of Adullam;5725 and the host4264 of the Philistines6430 encamped2583 in the valley6010 of Rephaim.7497

16 And David1732 was then227 in the hold,4686 and the Philistines'6430 garrison5333 was then227 at Bethlehem.1035

17 And David1732 longed,183 and said,559 Oh that4310 one would give me drink8248 of the water4325 of the well4480 953 of Bethlehem,1035 that834 is at the gate!8179

18 And the three7969 broke through1234 the host4264 of the Philistines,6430 and drew7579 water4325 out of the well4480 953 of Bethlehem,1035 that834 was by the gate,8179 and took5375 it, and brought935 it to413 David:1732 but David1732 would14 not3808 drink8354 of it, but poured it out5258 853 to the LORD,3068

19 And said,559 My God4480 430 forbid it2486 me, that I should do4480 6213 this thing:2063 shall I drink8354 the blood1818 of these428 men376 that have put their lives5315 in jeopardy? for3588 with the jeopardy of their lives5315 they brought935 it. Chapter 11

1 THEN all Israel gathered themselves to David to Hebron, saying, Behold, we are your blood and your flesh always;

2 And moreover in times past, even when Saul was king over us, it was you that led out and brought in Israel; and the LORD your God said to you. You shall feed my people Israel, and you shall be ruler over all the tribes of Israel.

3 Wherefore all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they appointed David king over Israel. Thus the words of Samuel the prophet were confirmed, which he spoke in the name of the LORD.

4 Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (which was formerly called Jebus) where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land.

5 And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, You shall not come in here. Nevertheless David gathered all the people together and took the city of Zion, which is called the city of David.

6 And David said, Whoever smites a Jebusite person first shall be chief and commander of the army. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and King David appointed him chief and commander of the army.

7 And David dwelt in the city of Zion; therefore they called it the city of David.

8 And David built the city round about, even from Millo, which is outside; and David gave the east side of the city to the rest of the people who were in the villages.

9 So David became greater and greater; and the LORD of hosts was with him.

10 These are the chiefs of David's mighty men, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom and helped him to be made king over all Israel, according to the word of the LORD which he spoke concerning Israel.

11 And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had: seated in the first rank, chief of thirty men, Gedho, a valiant man; he lifted up his spear and slew three hundred men in one hour.

12 And after him was Eleazar his uncle's son, of the city of Dakhokh, who was over three hundred men.

13 He was with David at Pasi-de-maya, when the Philistines were fighting there, where there was a field of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines.

14 And they set themselves in the midst of the field, and delivered it and slew the Philistines; and the LORD wrought a great victory.

15 Now three of the thirty chieftains went down to David, into the cave of Arlam; and the host of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Gabarey.

16 And David dwelt then in the tent, and the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem.

17 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me a drink of water from the great cistern of Bethlehem that is at the gate of the city!

18 And as soon as three men heard it, they broke through the camp of the Philistines, and went and drew water out of the cistern of Bethlehem that was by the gate of the city, and took it and brought it to David; but David would not drink of it, but poured it out in the presence of the LORD,

19 And said, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing in the presence of my God; for these men went forth with the jeopardy of their lives. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three valiant men.

20 And Abishai the brother of Joab was chief of thirty; for he lifted up his spear against three hundred and slew them, and he was highly honored, promoted to be over thirty men.

21 He was more honorable than the thirty men, and he became their chief and fought like thirty men.

22 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, a valiant man of the province of Kabzeel who had done good deeds; he slew the two mighty men of Moab; also he went down and slew a lion in the midst of a forest on a snowy day.

23 And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down against him with a staff, and took the spear out of the Egyptian's hand and slew him with his own spear.

24 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and was more renowned than the three valiant men.

25 And he was honorable among the three valiant men, for he fought like three mighty men; and David set him over his bodyguard and over the chiefs of the army;

26 Also the valiant men of the army were: Ashail the brother of Joab, Elhanan his uncle's son of Bethlehem,

27 Shammoth of the mount, King Helez the Pelonite,

28 Ira the son of Ikkes of Tekoa, Abiezer of Anathoth,

29 Sabbai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite,

30 Maharai the Netophathite, Heled the son of Baanah the Netophathite,

31 Ithai the son of Ribai of Gibeah, of the Benjamites, Benaiah the Pirathonite,

32 Hadai of the brooks of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite,
